What is a "shout-out"?

A shout-out is somewhere between an approval and a decline. You should use it when you like a song and want to give it some love, but don't like it enough to share on your main outlet.

Some examples:

  • You're signed up to SubmitHub as a YouTube Channel, but you also have a few small Spotify playlists. You find a song you like, but not enough to upload it to your YouTube. So you approve it as a "shout-out" to be shared on your smaller playlist, and let them know why it wasn't right for your YouTube.
  • You're signed up to SubmitHub because you have a big Spotify playlist with more than a thousand followers. You're also curating a smaller playlist that has a slightly different genre focus, and it only has 100 followers (well below the minimum requirements to join SubmitHub). You find a song that's good for your smaller playlist, but not for your big one, so you approve it as a "shout-out".

Does a "shout-out" count as an approval?

No, and also yes. It's somewhere in the middle :)

No, because it isn't a "proper" share to your main audience. The email sent to the submitter says "Declined, but still sharing" in the subject line, and includes the reason you provided about why it's not right for your main audience. So from the submitter's side, this is considered a "declined submission".

Yes, because you still have to actually share it, just like you'd share a normal approval. Until you share it, any associated premium credits are held up as "pending," just like a normal approval.

How it gets communicated:

From their side, it's sort of "Declined, but still going to share to a smaller ______." From your side, it's "Approved, but only going to share to a smaller _____." Hopefully that's not too confusing :-D

When you approve a song for a shout-out, we tell the submitter that their song has been declined, but that you're still going to share it somewhere small. When you share that song, we remind them that it was only a "shout-out," but still give them all the necessary links, as if it was a normal approval.

How does this affect your statistics?

Shout-outs are treated as approvals in your statistics, including your approval rate and engagement score. Visually they are typically "split out" (eg, "This curator has a 3% proper share rate and a 2% shout-out rate"), but when it comes to the Engagement score and Genre match score, the historical data around these two methods of sharing is combined.

Where you can find the option to share a song as a shout-out:

After selecting "I like this song", you'll see the option to choose between a proper share and a shout-out.

As a Spotify playlister, what are the minimum requirements for shout-out vs. proper share?

  • Proper share: 500 followers & 10 monthly listeners PER credit in your price (eg, 3 credit price = 30 minimum monthly listeners)
  • Shout-out: 100 followers

How many shout-outs can be approved?

To avoid too many shout-outs, only 30% of all approvals can be shout-outs. If you are a "Really Good Blogger," you cannot shout-out more often than you do a proper share.
